Wakefield Trinity 14-10 Hull FC: Daryl Powell's side battle to hard-fought Super League victory over struggling Black and Whites

Will Tate's brace helped give Wakefield's Betfred Super League season a belated lift-off as the hosts chiselled out a hard-fought 14-10 win over Hull FC at the DIY Kitchens Stadium.

Tate's second just before the hour mark shunted Trinity into the lead for the first time and proved just enough to repel John Cartwright's injury-hit and increasingly frustrated visitors.

Two tries from last season's leading Super League scorer, Lewis Martin, proved in vain and left FC in an increasingly desperate search for something to spark their season into life after a third straight loss.

The visitors had only themselves to blame having been on the front foot for most of the first period, only to be pegged back to 10-10 on the hooter after Davy Litten's missed kick sent Oliver Pratt through to score.

Martin had looked to be the danger man, both starting and finishing his side's early opener which Zak Hardaker duly converted to stretch their early lead to six.

Wakefield, with Josh Rourke restored at full-back in place of Max Jowitt after last week's loss to Warrington, looked like needing a helping hand to break through a resolute visitors' rear guard.

That assistance arrived after 15 minutes when a short drop-out deceived the Hull FC defence and after Mike McMeeken went close, Ky Rodwell's looping pass to the right sent Tate over in the corner.

McMeeken's refusal to let go of Brad Fash in the middle of the pitch led to Trinity undoing their good work as a spell of FC pressure resulted in Martin soaring over on the left for his second.

Wakefield, led by former Hull FC half-back Jake Trueman, pushed well for the remainder of the half, the resolute McMeeken and introduction of Caius Faatili giving them some much-needed muscle up front.

And they pulled level on the half-time hooter when Trueman's hopeful punt upfield was missed by FC full-back Litten, allowing Pratt to flop down on the loose ball, with Jack Sinfield's kick making it level at the break.

Sinfield was denied a try for obstruction five minutes into the second half, and the hosts came close again eight minutes later when Trueman jinked through and fed Rourke, who was denied a certain-looking score by a brilliant intervention from Litten.

Sinfield missed a chance to boot Wakefield two clear but they finally made their impetus pay just before the hour mark when the former Leeds man started the move that saw Corey Hall's short pass send Tate over in the corner for what proved to be the home side's winner.
